Will I? Can I?

Each day we are faced with choices. What do I wear? Can I complete the project on time? What should I do about little Johnny’s behavior? Each demonstrates a choice, whether to do something or face consequences. Now what type of consequences can come from choosing the wrong outfit? Think about it. All of us have said at one time or another I will just wear this and by mid morning we don’t like the way it feels or we find even worse that it is dirty or torn. If we don’t finish the project we face the wrath of the boss and or co-workers. Even with children, compliance though it may be forced, could result it long problems if not followed through with.

Compliance: a word that seems to bring a sense of powerlessness. It is usually a set of rules or directions that we have to abide by. Think of the last holiday. All of the slogans for driving on TV: Click it or ticket, Sober or slammer. Both are good examples of forced compliance.  When we voluntarily decide to do something and then later on, rationalize and justify every excuse in the world not to. Think of the first of every year. Millions of resolutions are made only to be broken by the first of February. Compliance?  Initially, but the urge to follow in the path of comfort: our old ways, or make the statement “I will do better next time”; but next time never comes.

How can you have compliance in your weight loss program? You have decided for one reason or another to choose this path. Health, clothes, relationships even a promotion. Whatever the reason, you have to follow the guidelines of the program to realize maximum success. A choice! When you are feeling like I just can’t do it. What are the consequences? Choices are hard. Sticking with them are sometimes harder. But you have chosen to lose weight. You have chosen to use this program. You have chosen to change who you are and by doing so will receive the reward.

If you chose to be non-compliant, you begin to realize the consequences and start feeling frustrated; you tell yourself I knew this was too much and eventually you quit. You give up on your dream, the investment you made, and most of all… yourself. Compliance is hard. That is why consequences are tied to it. Enforce the program rules on yourself. Seek the help of any of the staff, but remember you are doing this for you and you have to decide; reward or consequence? Comply or defy?
