With spring here and summer on the way, fruit smoothies sound refreshing and healthy.  They can be packed with nutrients, but be forewarned…fruit smoothies can also have 600 calories or more!

Aim to keep your smoothies between 150 and 300 calories if planning them as a healthy mini-meal or meal replacement.  Some suggestions for making low calorie, healthy smoothies are:

  1. Select 1 or 2 different complimentary fruits, either fresh or frozen.  Avoid any fruit in syrup or added sugars.  Keep portions under 1 ½ cups.
  2. Add a light, non-fat yogurt with < 70 calories per 6 oz.

If you want your smoothie to be a meal replacement, consider adding a protein powder that is moderate in calories and protein, and low in fat and sugar per serving.  Unjury* protein powder is a great choice providing 80 calories, 20 grams of protein, 0 grams of fat and sugar!

*Unjury protein powder can be purchased in the Nutrition Solutions store.
