Given the Choice – Drink Water You have heard us talk about the value of drinking water as part of your weight loss efforts as well as for the long term health benefits. And, remember, the long term goal is a healthy, long life. New research has discovered that drinking water as opposed to diet drinks may have a behavioral value as well. There is a reward center in the brain that helps us experience enjoyment and can give us a sense of pleasantness. The research conducted by Dr. Guido Frank has shown that artificial sweeteners “tickle” that region but don’t satisfy it. If anything, the artificial sweeteners just make that area of the brain more active. Now what does that mean for you? You guessed it; you want to satisfy the “tickle” so you look for something to eat or drink that will reduce the brain’s arousal which ultimately makes your job harder. So, stay with water. It will not only make you healthier, it will also make it easier to maintain your health. |
