Know your triggers!

The key to emotional and behavioral change is to know what makes us act and react the way we do. We were all raised, educated, and exposed to many things; add our personality, and that makes us who we are. I may see or feel a situation and react or respond much different than you. The situation may “trigger” the initial thought and response from me, where you just see it as another event in the day. We all need to be able to first recognize behaviors we want to change, but we also need to identify what triggers our emotional and thought response. Journaling is a wonderful way to keep track of our responses. It’s a tool that you can write down feelings, to people, places or settings that cause you distress or pleasure.  Once identified, we can work our way back and determine the chain of events that lead to our response. Now that the trigger and response is known, you can work on ways to stop the initial thought and change that thought resulting in a newer healthier you!
