Do you remember a time when you were expecting something big to happen….and it didn’t.  If the expectation was that something would bring joy, then you were disappointed.  If the expectation was something bad, then you were relieved.

It’s like that with weight loss.  If you expect to lose 2 pounds and you lose three, then you are happy.  If you expect to lose four pound but lose three, then you are disappointed.  You still lose three pounds, but your expectation brings a different emotion.

Expectations…It’s an interesting word.  It basically means we are anticipating an outcome, sometimes with excitement and sometimes with dread.  There is a famous psychologist who has built a whole theory of motivation around our attempts to anticipate events.  If our ability to anticipate isn’t working, we get stressed, anxious, and sometimes angry and depressed.  The important thing is to keep expectations reasonable and based on good information.  If our expectations are unrealistic, then we will be very unhappy.
